MY TOP 5 FAV DAIRY FREE PRODUCTS
I have a dairy allergy. No lactose pills won’t help me. No I can’t have butter or margarine. No not even ice cream…I’d keel over in pain.
It’s a serious allergy. I am allergic to milk protein which means unfortunately I can’t have any dairy…not from a cow, sheep or goat. No milk products period.
It really is tough because I do love cheese and I love chocolate even more. In fact, dairy-free products are just inedible and to be honest dairy free cheese just doesn’t cut it – the consistency is usually rubbery and well tastes the same. But lately, I have noticed that there a lot more diary free products available at everyday grocery stores which is super exciting to me!
There is a good portion of the population who are allergic to dairy or lactose, but most people just suffer through it. For those of you who are in my boat or perhaps choose not to eat dairy, here is my round up some of my favourite dairy free products and trust me, I have tried almost all of them.
BECEL – Becel makes a vegan margarine which has been my absolute saviour because not only can you spread it on a piece of toast and tastes great as is – it is also great for cooking and baking.
SILK – Non-sweetened Cashew Milk or Coconut milk. By far, Silk takes the cake as the best non-dairy milk brand. I have tried so many kinds including tetra packs. I don’t love the consistency of rice milk, hemp milk is just vile, soy and almond milk make me gassy and so I alternate between cashew and coconut milk. I use them both in my coffee, cereal and chia pudding etc.
SILK Coconut Yogurt – I just recently discovered this product and I am so in love! It`s now my go-to breakfast fav. I make yogurt power bowls almost every morning. You can check out my recipe here.
SUNFLOWER KITCHEN – Oregano and Basil Pesto…omg…so good. I love pesto but of course the real stuff has cheese in it. This is so good top on a delicious fresh tomato or smothered on a baguette. I highly recommend.
SUMMER FRESH – Hummus. I am a huge hummus fan and while generally hummus does not contain milk, once in a while a restaurant or prepared hummus (from the grocery store) may include a little cream – so beware. I have to say besides homemade, Summer Fresh is the next best thing. I love buying these to-go packs because they come in individual portions and include a package of delicious crackers.
If you know of any other delicious non-dairy products – please let me know and if you have any recipes – even better. xo
